  • End of Year Letter from Principal Keville

    June 27, 2017

    Greetings MMS Families,

Happy summer! I want to congratulate each one of you on a successful school year. This has been a great year for us, and I want to thank you for your consistent support and collaboration.  My third year as Principal of the Museum Magnet School has been a fulfilling and successful one.  I have enjoyed working with you and your children, and I look forward to continuing this work with you for many years to come.

We have a lot of new and exciting changes on the horizon, so please be sure to check our website over the summer for information.  We will now officially be called PS/IS 191 – The Riverside School for Makers and Artists.  We have enjoyed our time as the Museum Magnet School, and look forward to incorporating our work with local museums and cultural institutions in our new school under a new name.  We will send letters in August with information about the new school and your child’s assigned class, so please be check your mail!  Please remember that the start of the school year will be in the new building, with the entrance on 61st Street right below West End Avenue.  The building is still under construction, but as soon as it is ready we will set up tours.  Thank you for your cooperation as we go through this transition, and please read below for more information that will help you prepare your child for the upcoming school year.

In preparation for next school year, please read below and let us know if you have any questions.

    First Day of School
The first day of school is Thursday, September 7, 2017.

    Summer Packets
Each student has a summer packet that is to be completed by the first day of school.  I ask that you spread this work out over the summer, so that your child retains what they learned this past school year.   Please have your child read independently or read to your child for 20-30 minutes every day.   This short amount of time spent on reading will prepare your child for the upcoming school year.  We want all of our students to be successful, and reading will make that difference!

    Supply List(s)
Your child’s teacher has created a supplies list so that you have plenty of time to gather your school supplies for September.  This list is posted on our website, will be sent home on the last day of school, and will be redistributed at the end of August.

    Uniform Policy
We have decided to discontinue our uniform/dress code policy.  Students may wear clothing that they choose as long as it is school appropriate – (ie NO HATS, NO RIPPED JEANS, etc.)  More details on school clothing parameters to come.

    Cell Phone Policy
Our cell phone policy will remain the same.  Students will have the opportunity to check their cell phone in at the beginning of the day.   Cellphones must always remain out of sight.  If we see a cell phone out or hear it, it will be confiscated.  If the student gives the phone up without an argument, they will receive it back at the end of the day.  If the student pushes back or refuses to give it up, administration will become involved and a parent/guardian will have to retrieve the phone. This policy is in place to ensure that our students are focused on their studies, and not on their cell phones.  If your child needs to reach you or you need to reach your child, the school phones may be used.

    Check the Mail
Damaris will be sending informational packets out in August.  Please check your mail to ensure that you have all of the information you will need.

Again, thank you for all of your support. As always, my door is open to you, so feel free to reach out with questions or concerns. Enjoy your well-deserved summer!

    All my best,

PTA Members:

Co-President: Alexa Perez-Velazquez

My name is Alexa Perez-Velazquez, and I am the proud mother of three sons and a female Shih Tzu. Jared is in Ms. Salas's and Ms. Hood's class 5th grade class. I have served as Class Parent and enjoyed volunteering at past school events. I'm excited to be serving as PTA Co-President and Class Parent this school year, 2016/17.  It is rewarding investing time toward the school community's growth. Outside of PS 191, I work full-time as a Relationship Support Associate at a bank. I understand the unrelenting demands of work, school, fitness, household chores or whatever your tasks may be - this is why support is key. I'm looking forward to engaging with all parents as we work to strengthen and grow our school together.

Co-President: Charles Taylor

My name is Charles Taylor and I am co-president of the 2016/17 PTA. I had the honor of serving as vice president last year. I work as a nonprofit funding consultant, but my true passion is my social justice artist collective that focuses on gentrification. Our dynamic new executive board is ready to partner with our principal, parents and families, school staff, students and community stakeholders, in maximizing our successes and eliminating our challenges. We plan to occupy our new school next year fully prepared with heightened academic achievement, an enriched school culture, and a cohesive school community. We plan to leave it all on the field this year.

Treasurer: Zenobia Petersen

My name is Zenobia Petersen, I am the treasurer of the 2016/2017 PTA. I am the mother of three intelligent and beautiful young ladies, two of which are students at PS 191. I am looking forward to partnering with our parents to make this school year a phenomenal success.

Secretary: Cathy Ramos

My name is Cathy Ramos and I am the Secretary for 2016/17. My daughter, Charyzma, is in the 8th grade. I am a former SLT member and an active PTA parent. I am very excited to be part of the team and look forward to working with all the parents of PS 191. Together, we can support school staff in their efforts to improve student achievement and enrich school culture.
