  • PS 191 launches 3rd grade Gifted and Talented program

    We are excited to announce the launch of our 3rd grade Gifted and Talented program for the 2017-18 school year.  The G&T class will be taught by a teacher with a G&T license and will include children from across District 3.  Registration is happening now for students who have received acceptance letters into the program.  We look forward to meeting all our new families!

    Greetings MMS Families,
     
    Happy summer! I want to congratulate each one of you on a successful school year. This has been a great year for us, and I want to thank you for your consistent support and collaboration.  My third year as Principal of the Museum Magnet School has been a fulfilling and successful one.  I have enjoyed working with you and your children, and I look forward to continuing this work with you for many years to come.

    We have a lot of new and exciting changes on the horizon, so please be sure to check our website over the summer for information.  We will now officially be called PS/IS 191 – The Riverside School for Makers and Artists.  We have enjoyed our time as the Museum Magnet School, and look forward to incorporating our work with local museums and cultural institutions in our new school under a new name.  We will send letters in August with information about the new school and your child’s assigned class, so please be check your mail!  Please remember that the start of the school year will be in the new building, with the entrance on 61st Street right below West End Avenue.  The building is still under construction, but as soon as it is ready we will set up tours.  Thank you for your cooperation as we go through this transition, and please read below for more information that will help you prepare your child for the upcoming school year.

    First Day of School
    The first day of school is Thursday, September 7, 2017.

    Summer Packets
    Each student has a summer packet that is to be completed by the first day of school.  I ask that you spread this work out over the summer, so that your child retains what they learned this past school year.   Please have your child read independently or read to your child for 20-30 minutes every day.   This short amount of time spent on reading will prepare your child for the upcoming school year.  We want all of our students to be successful, and reading will make that difference!
     
    Supply List(s)
    Your child’s teacher has created a supplies list so that you have plenty of time to gather your school supplies for September.  This list is posted on our website, will be sent home on the last day of school, and will be redistributed at the end of August. 
     
    Uniform Policy
    We have decided to discontinue our uniform/dress code policy.  Students may wear clothing that they choose as long as it is school appropriate – (ie NO HATS, NO RIPPED JEANS, etc.)  More details on school clothing parameters to come.
     
    Cell Phone Policy
    Our cell phone policy will remain the same.  Students will have the opportunity to check their cell phone in at the beginning of the day.   Cellphones must always remain out of sight.  If we see a cell phone out or hear it, it will be confiscated.  If the student gives the phone up without an argument, they will receive it back at the end of the day.  If the student pushes back or refuses to give it up, administration will become involved and a parent/guardian will have to retrieve the phone. This policy is in place to ensure that our students are focused on their studies, and not on their cell phones.  If your child needs to reach you or you need to reach your child, the school phones may be used.

    Damaris will be sending informational packets out in August.  Please check your mail to ensure that you have all of the information you will need.

Parent Coordinator

  

Damaris Carrion is PS 191’s Parent Coordinator. The Parent Coordinator works to engage and involve parents within the school community, along with the school administration, the staff, the Parents Association and community groups. You may visit your Parent Coordinator with any questions or concerns in the main office. Dear Families,

Welcome to PS 191. We at PS 191 understand the vital role that parents play in the education of their children.  Please visit your child’s Teacher’s Page which will provide you with information about what your child is learning, school events, and any other announcements that may impact you and your child. Teacher Pages will be updated regularly and will prove to be a very useful tool to you and your family.

Upcoming school wide information may be found on all bulletin boards on the ground floor. A weekly news blast is emailed to parents every Friday with the upcoming week’s information. Please make sure that I have your email address to ensure that you receive the most up to date information. You may also contact me through email at dcarrion@schools.nyc.gov. Information may also be sent to you through our School Messenger System. This system will call homes with a pre-recorded message or reminder.  As we all know, successful communication between the home and school is a vital part of your child’s school experience.

I also invite you to become part of our Parent Association and /or School Leadership Team.

There will be many parent activities throughout the year which I encourage all parents to participate in.  Magnet Café is a wonderful experience for all parents to get information on upcoming school events. Please join us.
